'Track' immortalises Kristin Stephenson’s 2024 exhibition of the same name at Jonathan Smart Gallery in Ōtautahi Christchurch.
The artist describes this body of work as a sideways look at survival imagery, where the small and large, concrete and ephemeral, real and imagined, heroic and slight, abstract and not, all take precedence over each other.
Designed to mirror footsteps moving clockwise through the exhibition, 'Track' allows readers to experience the works as they would have in the gallery space. Featuring essays by Dr. Anna Smith and Sally Blundell but little other adornment, our goal was to present the works as closely to their true form as possible, while ensuring that Kristin’s art remained the focal point of the catalogue. Giving prominence to the artwork without the design encroaching.
Throughout the project, we had the privilege of working closely with Kris, whose candid, clever, and slyly subversive works are always poignant, moving and thought provoking. It was an honour to contribute to a publication celebrating the work of such an exceptional artist and person.
